Apple's iPhone Duo Pre-Orders Hit a Supply Wall

Apple's iPhone Duo pre-order rollout is a useful case study in launch strategy. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple knew it faced severe supply constraints from manufacturing challenges, yet opened pre-orders anyway. His read is that the company prioritized an early start to its fiscal first quarter over meeting demand, a trade-off that can frustrate the most loyal early adopters.

The launch also expanded well beyond the original plan of the U.S. and China, with pre-orders opening in more than 70 countries simultaneously. Within 30 minutes, estimated shipping dates in most countries slipped to around January 25.

For product and supply chain teams, the lesson is about sequencing: when inventory lags, the speed of the announcement can undercut customer trust. Gurman also notes Apple typically underpromises on delivery, which may soften the impact.
