AMD Radeon Owners Get Near-Full DLSS Through Fan Mod
A fan-made project is pushing AMD hardware into territory that was once exclusive to NVIDIA. DLSS-NR on AMD, led by developer Daniel Blanco, has reached its Alpha 0.8.0 release, published October 17. It now brings nearly the full DLSS stack to Radeon GPUs, including DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and Frame Generation with up to 4x multi-frame generation in supported games. FSR 4.1.1 is also bundled, so it no longer depends on the driver.
What stands out technically is the approach. According to the developer, this is a ground-up reimplementation of the DLSS runtimes using custom HIP kernels, not a translation layer. Users must supply their own NVIDIA DLLs. Support is strongest on RDNA 4 and RDNA 3, while RDNA 2 remains experimental and limited to Neural Rendering.
For the industry, this is a reminder that upscaling and frame generation are becoming software ecosystems that hardware vendors do not fully control. Early Ray Reconstruction results are mixed, so this is still alpha territory.
