Young people are being recruited as money mules

A new analysis highlights a worrying trend: more than 8,900 people aged under 30 were arrested for money laundering offenses in England and Wales between 2020 and 2025. That is more than six in 10 of all money laundering arrests recorded over the period.

The analysis describes a growing pattern in which organized crime groups recruit young people as 'money mules', individuals who move illegal funds through their own bank accounts. Many may not fully understand the legal exposure they face when they agree to do this.

For employers, universities and anyone working in financial services, technology or security, this is a reminder that financial crime increasingly depends on human recruitment, not just technical attacks. Fraud awareness, clear communication about money mule schemes, and early intervention with young people can make a real difference.
