Rocket Lab launches 3 Hawk satellites for signals intel
Rocket Lab launched three private signals-intelligence satellites, called Hawk, to orbit on October 21. The mission was the 19th launch of the year for the California-based company, a pace that shows how frequently commercial providers are now getting hardware into space.
Signals intelligence, the collection and analysis of radio and electronic signals, has traditionally been dominated by government programs. Private satellite builders and launch providers taking on these missions signals a shift in who builds and operates sensitive space capabilities.
For people working in aerospace, this matters in a few ways. Launch cadence and reliability are becoming competitive differentiators, and demand for engineers, mission operators and data analysts who can work across commercial and defense customers is likely to keep growing.
How do you see the balance between commercial and government roles in space intelligence evolving?
