Samsung's Galaxy Ring gets upgraded sleep apnea feature

Samsung has made its upgraded sleep apnea feature available in the US, extending it to the Galaxy Ring and Watch9. The rollout follows FDA clearance in July and an approval in Korea announced last week. Samsung says the Galaxy Ring is the first smart ring with an FDA-cleared, over-the-counter sleep apnea risk detection feature.

The original version, which received De Novo authorization from the FDA in February 2024, could only indicate whether signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea were detected. The upgrade is a clear example of how consumer wearables are moving from general wellness tracking toward regulated health features. For product teams, that raises the bar on clinical validation, regulatory strategy and clear user communication. For marketers and designers, it shows that health claims in wearables now carry real regulatory weight.

As more health features pass regulatory review, expect hiring demand to grow for people who can bridge hardware, software, medical compliance and user experience.

What regulated health features do you think will matter most in wearables next?
