ChatGPT can now peek at your Chrome tabs
OpenAI is extending ChatGPT's Google Chrome extension so it can use the browser tabs you already have open. According to OpenAI, once the extension is installed, users can tag Chrome in ChatGPT's web or desktop app, and ChatGPT can then view those tabs. OpenAI has also posted a demo video showing the feature.
The update is notable because the ChatGPT Atlas browser is no longer available, and this extension is now the path forward for connecting ChatGPT to everyday browsing. It shows AI assistants moving from standalone tools toward working inside the environments people already use.
For product teams and marketers, this raises practical questions about context, permissions and user trust. When an assistant can see live browser state, transparency about what it accesses becomes a core product requirement, not an afterthought.
Where do you see the biggest opportunity or risk in assistants that can read your working context?
