Epic Launcher Plans Linux Support Including SteamOS

Epic Games has named SteamOS among the Linux distributions it plans to support with its new Epic Games Launcher, which is currently in Preview. Epic communications director Jake Jones said the company wants to support as many Linux distributions as possible, including Fedora, SteamOS, Cachy and Omarchy. It appears to be the first time Epic has explicitly named SteamOS.

The Preview currently ships only as a .deb package for Debian and Ubuntu, while Epic tests other packaging formats. For the industry, this signals growing attention to Linux as a serious gaming platform, especially with devices like the Steam Deck and Steam Machine. Open questions remain, including how the launcher will work in SteamOS Game Mode and how Windows games will run through a compatibility layer.

For developers and PC gaming professionals, it is worth watching how platform support decisions like this shape distribution and tooling.
