Mercedes-AMG's first ground-up SUV packs 1,150hp
Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its first ground-up SUV, the 2028 AMG GT SUV, an electric people-hauler positioned as the larger sibling of the GT four-door coupe. The GT coupe already drew attention for its three axial flux motors delivering over 1,150 horsepower, and the SUV is described as equally powerful with ultra-fast charging.
For the automotive industry, this signals that performance brands are no longer treating electric platforms as a compromise for practicality. A high-output SUV built from the ground up shows how EV architecture is being adapted across body styles, not just sedans.
For engineers, product planners and EV specialists, the interesting questions sit beneath the headline: how thermal management, charging infrastructure and motor packaging hold up when performance and daily usability share one vehicle.
What do you think performance EVs will look like once every luxury brand has an SUV in this class?
