Oldest known shipwreck found off Turkey's coast

A shipwreck off the coast of Turkey is being described as the oldest in the world by a team of archaeologists. Little of the vessel survives, so the researchers relied on its cargo, including pottery vessels, to tentatively date the wreck to around 2700 to 2400 B.C.

Why it matters: when physical evidence is thin, careful reading of cargo and context can still produce strong historical conclusions. That approach is valuable well beyond archaeology, from heritage management to any field where data is partial and conclusions must be carefully qualified.

It also shows the value of interdisciplinary teamwork. Dating a wreck from artifacts requires expertise in pottery, maritime trade and chronology working together.

The dating is described as tentative, which is a useful reminder that early findings are often revised as more evidence emerges.
